Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) is an initiative linking members of universities in the US, the UK, and Canada who are concerned that the research, patenting and licensing policies of academic institutions are restricting access to medicines in poor countries.
The workshop report from our September 2002 conference and a series of articles from the Yale Journal of Health Policy, Law & Ethics introduces the key issues and policies related to this topic. Based on our understanding of these issues, UAEM has created a novel structure--known as the 'equitable access license', or EAL --which universities can adopt into their technology transfer agreements in order to facilitate greater access to biomedical products produced from their research.
